The first library music album will be titled “A Series of Drones”. Within this library album drones of differing style will be available. Drones are incredibly versatile, drones can be low, dark and brooding, such as Colin Stestons score for Hereditary, or Tim Heckers score for Infinity Pool. They can also be peaceful and futuristic, such as Vangelis’s score for Blade Runner or Eduard Artermyev’s score for Stalker. This library album will consist of 16 tracks, the length of the pieces will average from 1-4 minutes. I found that to be the average from looking at drone music library albums on a website titled A Sound Effect, which is a library music website. Some library music albums can have hundreds of tracks, such as this shepards tone library album. This would not be possible due to the amount of work that would take with recording, mixing and mastering, alongside other projects. During a meeting with my element 1 supervisor Milo, we found that 16 tracks per library album would be a good amount.
Within this library album, I will explore different sound sources for the drones. I want to use this album as a way for me to experiment with different ways of creating drones. Throughout this blog you can see some experiments I have done in order to create drones, such as using the Koma elektronik field kit to create drones using a DC motor and a contact microphone. I plan to use contact microphones, field recordings, and synthesisers as the main source of these drones.
Kiera Coward Deyell was an inspiration for this project, she was a sound arts visiting practitioner who works primarily in sound for screen. I was really drawn to her work by her work very low frequency bass and feedback. During the lecture she showed us a short film that she had done the sound for, my ears were met by waves of low frequency bass feedback drones, vibrating my whole body. The use of this bass and feedback drones was incredibly affective, due to the volume you could feel it physically, forcing you to be aware and watch what’s on screen.
